How to bring Quicken .QIF transactions into QuickBooks
1. Drop your .QIF file into the local converter
BankFilePro parses !Type:Bank and !Type:CCard blocks, including legacy Quicken apostrophe dates like D10/ 5'26, Payee (P), Memo (M), Amount (T), and Check Number (N).
2. Confirm Account Type & Check Numbers
Verify whether the target register is Checking, Savings, or Credit Card, inspect all rows in the preview table, and download the free 10-row .QBO test file.
3. Upload to QuickBooks Online or Desktop Bank Feeds
Import the resulting .QBO file into QuickBooks so transactions enter the Bank Feeds staging workflow for clean vendor rule matching rather than bypassing reconciliation.
Common Quicken .QIF quirks handled automatically
| Import Error / Symptom | Technical Root Cause | How BankFilePro Resolves It Locally |
|---|---|---|
| Quicken apostrophe dates (e.g. D10/ 5'26 or D3/14'2025) | Legacy QIF exporters format years with an apostrophe delimiter and padded spaces that break spreadsheet formulas. | Dedicated QIF date parser normalizes every D-record into strict YYYYMMDD120000 OFX timestamps. |
| Check numbers stored in N-records alongside text tokens (DEP, ATM, EFT) | Quicken uses the N line for both numeric check numbers and transaction type abbreviations. | Extracts numeric check serials cleanly into <CHECKNUM> and sets <TRNTYPE>CHECK automatically. |
| Duplicate imports when re-exporting overlapping QIF date ranges | QIF files lack unique transaction IDs (FITIDs), causing repeated imports in QuickBooks. | Builds stable IDs from the account and full transaction details. Identical records without bank IDs still need review before re-importing. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why cannot QuickBooks Online or Desktop open .QIF files directly?
QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a 1990s plain-text format without account headers or unique transaction IDs (FITIDs). QuickBooks requires Web Connect (.QBO) files with structured OFX SGML headers so it can prevent duplicate bank feed imports.
Does QIF to .QBO preserve both Payee and Memo lines?
Yes. The QIF P (Payee) line maps to the 32-character <NAME> tag, while combined P + M (Memo) details are preserved up to 255 characters inside <MEMO>.
Does this support !Type:CCard Quicken credit card exports?
Yes. When !Type:CCard is detected in the QIF header, BankFilePro automatically switches the output wrapper from <BANKMSGSRSV1> to <CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1>.
